La Porte Education Foundation to host Breakfast with the Stars

The La Porte Education Foundation will host its annual “Breakfast with the Stars” on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 7 a.m. The event will be held at La Porte ISD’s Heritage Elementary School, which is located at 4301 East Blvd.

The event spotlights LPISD educators who were recipients of innovative project grants awarded by the Foundation during the 2010-2011 school year. The Foundation awarded nearly $70,000 in grants to deserving teachers in November 2010.

Reserved tables are available at varying levels of sponsorship. Star Table sponsorships include the Solar Spectacular Table, $1,000; Universe Table, $750; Galaxy Table, $500; and Shooting Star Table, $300. Individual tickets are also available at $30 per person.

Norman Malone Memorial Mayor’s Golf Tournament set for Apri1 20

March 29, 2011 -- The sixth annual Norman Malone Memorial Mayor’s Golf Tournament is set for Wednesday, April 20, at Bay Forest Golf Course, with proceeds from the event benefitting the La Porte Education Foundation.

The tournament includes shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The format is four-person scramble with two flights, with the second flight based on the average tournament score.

Major sponsors for the event are Walmart, Gringo’s, Port of Houston Authority, Gulf Winds International and Arborleaf Engineering and Surveying, Inc.

Entry is $100 per person or $400 per team, which includes the green fee, cart fee and range balls. Breakfast and lunch will be provided during the first flight, and lunch and dinner will be provided during the second flight.

Fajitas will be served and awards presented following play.

Hole sponsorships are $150, and team and hole sponsorships are $500. Tent sponsorships are also $500.

MORE THAN 1,200 ATTEND LA PORTE EDUCTION CELEBRATION

More than1,200 students, parents, teachers and community members attended the annual La Porte Education Celebration hosted by the La Porte Education Foundation on March 7 at La Porte High School. “La Porte ISD is BIG on Education” was the theme for the event, tying in with the Texas Public Schools Week theme of “Education: It’s Bigger Here.”

“The Education Foundation is an event held each year in March at La Porte High School,” said Charlcya Wheeler, La Porte Education Foundation vice president for community engagement, noting that the purpose of the celebration is to provide an opportunity for the community to get involved in the education process. “Each school has table-top displays highlighting some of their activities during the school year.”

In addition, the celebration showcased a variety of classroom projects made possible by grants awarded by the Foundation in 2010. During the November 2010 Dollar Patrol, the Foundation awarded nearly $70,000 in innovative project grants to deserving teachers.

The event also showcased the talents of a number of LPISD music groups, with parents and community members having the opportunity to watch performances by students from all grade levels. LPISD nurses encouraged drivers to sign the “no texting while driving” pledge, and representatives from the LPISD curriculum department shared information about kindergarten registration.

Prize drawings were held for adults and children who completed a “Big Top Ticket” by visiting a number of designated booths during the evening. In addition, drawings were held for LPISD teachers, other employees, and principals and assistant principals, and a number of raffle items were also available. Prizes were donated by DuPont, Kuraray Septon America, Noltex, LyondellBasell, Air Products, Kaneka Texas, Dianal America, Vesco and Foundation directors Kathy Booth and Debbie Wade.

For the fourth consecutive year, La Porte Elementary School won $500 from the Foundation and

the district’s “traveling trophy” for having the highest percentage of adults attending the celebration.

Rizzuto Elementary School, which had the second highest percentage, was awarded $300 by the

Foundation.

Michael Barry Assumes La Porte Education Foundation Presidency; Andrew Connolly, Randy Clements Join Board of Directors

Michael Barry has been named president of the La Porte Education Foundation in place of Robert

L. Barger who recently took a job transfer with his employer that made it necessary for him to relocate

out of the La Porte community.

Prior to assuming the LPEF board presidency, Barry was the LPEF president elect and vice

president of career awareness. Currently, Barry also is the vice president of operations for Gulf Coast

Educators Federal Credit Union.

LPEF also recently welcomed two new board of directors members. Randy Clements is the unit

manager for crop protection chemicals at the DuPont – La Porte Site and Andrew Connolly is the La

Porte plant manager for Air Products & Chemicals Inc.

DuPont Rubber Duck Regatta to be held Nov. 6

A total of 10,000 yellow rubber ducks will race to the finish line in Galveston Bay on Nov. 6 as

part of the DuPont Rubber Duck Regatta benefitting the La Porte Education Foundation.

The ducks will be dropped into a racing area at Sylvan Beach, where they will bob back to shore

for a chance to win a long list of prizes for their “adoptive parents.” Businesses and industries throughout

the La Porte-Bayshore area have shown their support for the Foundation by serving as event or prize

sponsors.

The event will also include a fun family fair, with booths, activities, entertainment, food, games

and prizes. The fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the race beginning at 3 p.m. Admission is

free.

“We are very excited about the DuPont Rubber Duck Regatta and encourage everyone to join in

the fun by adopting ducks and coming out to enjoy the fair and the race on Nov. 6,” said Bob Pizzitola,

chairman for the event. “We hope to bring our entire community together in demonstrating support for

the students and teachers of La Porte ISD!”

DuPont is the “Top Duck” title sponsor for the event, with Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit

Union the “Super Duck” sponsor.

“Mighty Duck” sponsors include Beacon Federal Credit Union, Kuraray, Noltex LLC., Kaneka

Top prize is $5,000 and a chance to win a new Ford Mustang from Reliance Ford. First prize is a

five-night cruise for two, second prize is $1,000, and third prize is a 42-inch HD TV. Additional prizes

are two iPads, a gas grill, an X-Box 360, a deep-sea fishing trip for four, an electronic book reader, an

iPod, and more.

Those who would like to “adopt” a duck may obtain an “adoption paper” in the front office of any

La Porte ISD campus or in the Communications Office at the La Porte ISD Administration Building,

1002 San Jacinto St., in La Porte. Cost for adopting a single duck is $5, and a Quack Pack (five ducks

plus one free duck) is $25. Other packages include the Quackers’ Dozen (10 ducks plus two free) at $50,

the Flock (20 ducks plus four free) at $100, and the Regatta Racer (50 ducks plus 10 free) at $250.

LPISD schools are joining in the excitement by trying to sell at least one duck adoption per

student at that campus. Schools that meet their quota by Oct. 1 will be awarded $1,200 by the Foundation,

and schools that meet the Oct. 29 deadline will receive $1,000.

Completed adoption forms and payments may be submitted to the school office or the

Communications Office or mailed to DuPont Rubber Duck Regatta, c/o La Porte Education Foundation,

P.O. Box 1272, La Porte, TX 77572.

Proceeds from the event will go to the La Porte Education Foundation to fund innovative, creative

instructional projects for students and teachers in La Porte ISD. Since 1993, the Foundation has awarded

nearly $1 million in grants to LPISD teachers, with $75,000 in grants presented during the 2009-2010

school year.
